What is your opinion on the AR15?

After a long discussion on the 2nd Amendment which was our most heated I guess you could say.

Let’s narrow it down.

The most ostracized firearm on the market is the AR15.

What are your opinions on this rifle?

Discuss and be civil.

It's a nice weapon, with a lot of destructive potential. IMO people should be allowed to own it and its ilk, but not nearly as willy-nilly as current US laws allow.

@IstillmissEP All hamstrung by the 2nd amendment having been written without any foresight. Willy-nilly is exactly right.

@IstillmissEP I know a lot about our laws. 2A is stupid, and no, there is no foresight. It is the stupidest possible foundation for a legal system of gun ownership.

Are you all right with me bearing nuclear arms? The constitution sure is.

@IstillmissEP keep it civil guys

The context for the amendment was to allow for a standing militia and sustenance hunting.
The writers had no reference point to say that an AR is a good idea for the public to own. @IstillmissEP

@IstillmissEP Lmao, that's the loophole you're using for blatantly picking and choosing what "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED"? Fucking lol, creative interpretation indeed.

The constitution doesn't say small arms. And it doesn't say firearms. It just says arms. You're going to pretend that nuclear arms aren't arms?

What I can keep and bear is largely a function of my budget.

Here is a nuke, in backpack form, btw.

@IstillmissEP It's a blatant loophole and creative interpretation of the constitution that should give any strict constructionists the heebie jeebies.

Guess what, the 2A doesn't say "firearms", it just says "arms". That includes cannons, tanks, fighter jets - and yes, nuclear arms.

@IstillmissEP That's because they're violating the constitution to retain a manner of sanity. I respect pragmatism, but that's what it is 🤷‍♂️

The founders might not have known about glocks and ARs, but they had artillery and ships of the line in their day - if they wanted to make sure that only small arms were available to citizens, that language would have been a lot more clear.

@IstillmissEP If people weren't bending over backwards to interpret the second amendment in ever-more contrived fashion - you'd walk over to Boeing, plop down the cash, and fly home in your new ride. Nothing too fancy, something mid-range - an F-16 with a good warranty should be in your budget with room for ammunition and maintenance.

Forgot F-16s are GD. But you get the idea.

@IstillmissEP you can buy tanks, most are decommissioned.

There are a bunch of M4 Sherman variants ranging at $150k to $375K

@IstillmissEP I know that we resort to transparently goofy interpretation of the second amendment because the alternative is too crazy to contemplate. That there is an example of blatant judicial activism.

Seriously, the second amendment is not that complex, there isn't nearly as much room for lawyering in there as people like to pretend. You can tell me all you want about how the government is not abridging your right to bear arms, but it's fucking nonsense.

The same pretext that can regulate large-caliber weaponry and full-auto, can regulate semi-auto. It's all bullshit - SHALL NOT BE ABRIDGED is pretty fucking cut and dry.

@IstillmissEP Like that makes a practical difference in this case.

Not always decommissioned @IstillmissEP there’s a guy on some YouTube channel who owns a M4A3E8 the fires live rounds.

A few people in the US own the FlaK36 AT/AA gun that fire live rounds

And a number have things like the Lahti 20mm ATR which let me tell you kicks hard
