Does white privilege exist?

Privilege is a very touchy subject. Some people say whites are privileged, some say just white males are privileged, some say that blacks are privileged, and some say it’s the rich that are privileged.

Normally I don’t chime in with my personal opinions but as a Norse Pagan I believe we it is up to us to determine pure success. Nobody is above or under one another.

Any way, dicuss and like always, be civil.

It's a misunderstood concept.

People think white privilege means they don't have problems.

No, nobody is saying that.

It means their problems are unrelated to their race.

You can be white and poor unhappy miserable dying whatever. You can be black and rich famous and wealthy.

But in aggregate, white people do better on every statistical measure, and individual white people will never deal with daily racism. The wealthiest most powerful black person still deal with racism the poorest white person will not.

@CountScrofula that brings up a great point for other questions. Like is that just our society? Can you be racist towards white people?

It’s been tossed around and people try to manipulate the definition of racism to fit their desired mind set.

@TakingBackMidgard The way I see it the "racism is all equally bad" argument is kind of divorced from reality. Dictionary definitions are fine for quick reference the world is more complciateed than that.

Simple test is the racial slur test.

'Cracker' is the strongest racial slur for white people I know. No white person is going to feel that word like a weapon used to wound them.

The n-word, a word so strong I'm not comfortable writing it out? Entirely different force and meaning, and impact on the person who hears it.

If all racism is equal, those words hsould harm equally - and they don't.

So if you can be racist to white people... not in a way that really matters IMHO. In a society where white people aren't in charge, differnet situation.

@CountScrofula way to dissect the and explain piece by piece. And this is more so relevant in American society. I’m not so much accustomed to other places around the world.

I feel so many people want to rip the scab off the wound that was our past to help it heal however when a wound has a scab it’s already healing.

I feel something started this whole privilege rhetoric and it has opened the wound back up.
