Does white privilege exist?

Privilege is a very touchy subject. Some people say whites are privileged, some say just white males are privileged, some say that blacks are privileged, and some say it’s the rich that are privileged.

Normally I don’t chime in with my personal opinions but as a Norse Pagan I believe we it is up to us to determine pure success. Nobody is above or under one another.

Any way, dicuss and like always, be civil.

I think that many misunderstand what white privilege is supposed to mean. It isn’t necessarily that you were given better opportunities etc but that simply because you are white certain prejudices aren’t applied. Like that man Jose ( can’t recall the last name) from the news story he was applying for several jobs over the course of months. Supposedly he decided to try something by editing only his first name by one letter. Making it Joe etc he had all the same references, job experience & reapplied to places finding he did get many responses. Of course we can’t say for sure it had to do with his name but it is an interesting story. I think it’s not an easy topic because of course how do you expect a person to apologize or consistently acknowledge a treatment they aren’t responsible for. While also recognizing other people can be judged immediately negatively for not being white. It’s not a simple conversation but it can be a hot button topic with many people.

@Mrsbetweenfatandfit it’s a very touchy subject and I am happy to see so many of us coming together to hear each other out.

With your comment about Jose. I’ve seen cases like this and I can’t figure out if it would be considered a form of privilege or corruption?

And by corruption I mean such as a racist hiring manager. And if that’s the case do we hold it against the white person who was hired by the racist hiring manager or should we hold the racist hiring manager responsible for his or her subjective mind set?

Of course this is all situational and could be different anywhere around the world.
This is so well articulated. I think many right away feel put on defense upon the mere suggestion that they've benefitted from historical inequity, when it isn't a personal indictment of anyone's skin color or denial of the effort they've personally put forth to make their life what it is. It is a conversation about the additional obstacles non-white people endure as a result of not being white.@Mrsbetweenfatandfit
