Because the alternative candidate was shit.
If you need proof of this, 8 years earlier the same candidate was taking a strong lead and her own party shoved her out of the way, because they wanted someone with no experience whatsoever as their candidate because he looked good on paper.
If her own party didn't have faith in her, why should anyone else?
