British people, would you be more likely to vote Labour if it supported a second referendum on Brexit?

As a Labour member and supporter of the leadership, I've generally supported the line they have taken as a compromise position. They've tried to gain acceptance by Labour leavers by honouring the referendum and also tried to gain acceptance by remainers by offering a softer version of Brexit than the Tories.

This strategy worked in the 2017 General Election when we polled well, without quite winning the election. Times have changed though and both leavers and remainers have hardened their positions. Most leavers see nothing short of a no-deal Brexit as a betrayal of what they voted for, even though the leave campaign talked about negotiating a deal and even sometimes mentioned the Norway option. Most remain voters I know who are not Labour Party members see anything less than a second referendum as a betrayal by the Labour Party. I find this attitude frustrating - even as a remain voter myself - because if Labour is going to go against an existing referendum result and a third of its voters, it can't do so lightly. The Labour voting coalition is traditionally a diverse coalition which includes (for example) northern working-class people and liberal metropolitan young professionals.

This is what it is though and much as I'd like to talk about Jeremy Corbyn's social democratic policies, its Brexit which is on most people's minds. Judging by canvassing, its possible Labour will finish third in the European elections and underscore even their own poor polling (though the Tories will be fourth or fifth).

Please comment in as much detail as you like. I really can't be arsed dealing with people being rude though and please keep it relevant. I don't mind non-Brits joining this debate as long as you are not saying ridiculous things about globalist conspiracies or whatever.

Thanks

Lol, why did they even give the people the power on such a complicated issue. Crazy at best 😊
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Justenjoyit I'm not sure I even understand it and I'm a massive politics geek.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Justenjoyit To outflank UKIP and Farage , believing that the country could never be so stupid as to vote to leave the EU .... probably one of the greatest political miscalculations ever.
Platinum · M
@RodionRomanovitch if you knew anything about what the eu has done to the uk you would not make comments like that....the people are not selfish as most politicians who make a lot of money from the eu...
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Platinum Well please excuse my ignorance , why don't you tell me about all these terrible things the EU has done to the UK ?
Platinum · M
@RodionRomanovitch i thought French people would know, if macron had lost , France may have been trying to get out of the eu.....for years they have helped 1000s of British companies move to Europe leaving 100000s of people out of work, while the poorer countries in the eu have benefited. Now they charge us more money each year while doing less trade with us...I can understand why the eu want us to stay, they will suffer more than us...but I believe the eu will trade with us once we leave...
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Platinum well this is why I said you just cant give the power to the people on such a complicated issue, every one has there say lol😂😂😂 and no one realy knows.
Platinum · M
It's not complicated , with a leader who wants to leave, it could be sorted easily....once we leave we can trade with many countries and we will continue to trade with the eu.....I think it's insulting to put crying faces while talking about a serious subject....@Justenjoyit @Justenjoyit
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Platinum But it's hard to take you seriously.
Platinum · M
I feel sorry for you...you attack me every chance you get and you can't take me seriously just shows the type of person you are...@Burnley123
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Platinum well lets put it this way, people are a bit more aware of the situation. So realy the real vote, the fair vote should happen now 😊
Platinum · M
Tell me what people know now that they never knew when we had our once in a lifetime vote....we were told if we voted leave....ww3,immediate recession, house price crash, mass unemployment and everyone £4300 worse off and it is the complete opposite ....the was a vote by MPs to have a referendum and they overwhelmingly voted to have one and then they had a vote to submit art 50 which was 542-53 in favour ...doesn't democracy mean much to you...@Justenjoyit
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Platinum for starters a lot of expats like myself who would have vote stay, but we were not allowed to vote that number would have turned the vote over to stay 😊
Platinum · M
@Justenjoyit but expats would be voting for selfish reasons not for the good of the country ...you are frightened of losing of all the benefits they get, the heating allowance....you are totally selfish...you don't care about us just yourselves...
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Platinum lol like every one else😂 you have answered all my questions in your posts. I rest my case thank you 👍️
Platinum · M
I have but you have ignored all the things I've mentioned...in fact what questions have you asked...you just said about expats and it's a fact, you don't care about my country, just selfish so you can still get your benefits....@Justenjoyit
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Platinum A couple of things ; Firstly , I'm not French I'm British , and before you start with the 'selfish ex-pat' stuff , I receive no benefits from the UK government other than the one that my EU passport gives me at the moment to live and work anywhere within the European Union. (Something you would gladly deny your own children and future generations the privilege of .... so who's being selfish again ?)

Secondly , Macron didn't lose and no French presidential candidate would have a cat in hell's chance of getting elected running on a promise to leave the EU. That's just a wet dream you share with the Steve Bannons of this world.

The rest of your reply doesn't even warrant a response. It's just stuff you made up as far as I can discern.
Platinum · M
My son lives in Spain and so did I and all my friends who still live there have said they want to remain for selfish reasons but you are too gutless ,all the expats get some type of benefits some younger ones not so much, but the majority of them are older and get benefits...I did...I never said macron did lose, dillusional again...and as far as all the things I've said, I can prove them but you are far too stupid to even listen, I never said you were French although you live there ...now go away unless you can start sounding less like an idiot and more like someone who can debate.....@RodionRomanovitch

Platinum has put his point across well, you much more poorly.
If you wish to work in Europe once the UK leaves the EU you will still be entitled to you'll just have to get a visa as you would if you wanted to work outside of Europe.
Platinum · M
When we leave it will make no difference to those working here or Brits working in the eu.....our children and their children will still be able to go and work anywhere...expats want to remain and I don't blame them, but at least accept its for selfish reasons...thank you@GeniUs @GeniUs
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Platinum Seeing as you're clearly only interested in trading insults then I will just add that you're full of shit. Britons will have no automatic right of residence or permission to work across the EU.

" If macron had lost , France may have been trying to get out of the eu.....for years they have helped 1000s of British companies move to Europe leaving 100000s of people out of work."

" as far as all the things I've said, I can prove them "

Go on then .......
Platinum · M
They are not insults they are fact and stop acting like an idiot if you don't want to be called one....
@RodionRomanovitch
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Platinum Oh look ..... you googled something to try to support your assertion ..... aren't you a clever boy !

(It's a pity I'd need a fucking magnifying glass to be able to read it.)

And what do you think would happen were I to google 'Has the UK helped European firms to move here ?"

Here's a friendly suggestion , stop making a fool of yourself.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@GeniUs
If you wish to work in Europe once the UK leaves the EU you will still be entitled to you'll just have to get a visa as you would if you wanted to work outside of Europe.

Yes but if there is a hard Brexit of any kind then there will be big restrictions on this. Brits like Platinum don't get that ending freedom of movement cuts both ways. He once even told me: "Ex-pats have nothing to do with immigration." It sums up the attitude of a lot of Brits, unfortunately.
Platinum · M
Of course I googled it and if you had a brain you know how clicking on it it gets bigger...if you googled something it would show we have gained something from being in the eu...but I told you the things that they have done to my country and you asked for proof and I gave it to you...you are the one making a fool of yourself...if I had told you what they had done to this country without googling it, then you would call me a liar...they gave a grant to cadburys to move to Poland and what happens to British jobs...you don't care....and it costs us 8 billion a year for this ...you can show me how the eu helps us...proof please also did you know that trade with the eu has gone down by 11% in the last ten years and how do we not know this will get worse, but selfish you won't care...I'm having fun...never thought I would find someone so clueless....@RodionRomanovitch
Platinum · M
@Burnley123 this is why you come over like a fool, no one wants the end of freedom of movement, just controlled movement with people who can add to our country and not come here to scrounge ...you can't get 10000 of our people turning up in Spain or France and get benefits and that's what we want ...workers..
