In general, they should stick to the ideas they espoused when trying to get elected: but prioritise them and be willing to trade compromise on one ideal in order to advance another.

Compromise isn't a virtue in itself, it's the absolutely necessary lubricant that all politics (democratic or otherwise) depends upon: except in the [i]rare [/i]case where a huge majority of the population agrees upon a topic.
