Democrats believe that high unemployment and a weak economy better serves their best political interest.
They prefer to see congress discussing such things as extending unemployment benefits, expanding Medicaid coverage and government jobs programs. "A job" doesn't bond someone to the Democrats' community organizers as much as a welfare check does. A better job with a bigger paycheck can be enough to move from the project to the suburbs where Democrats are far fewer. Better to tie the unemployed and underemployed to the project where Democrat community organizers can deliver daily sermons about it all being the fault of the rich not paying enough taxes.
Trump is a serious threat to the Democrats' core. The better the economy, the more Americans prosper, the more energy they need to exert to get him out of their way.
