He put the funding back, but only because of the public image nightmare that was about to unfold. I'm sure they assumed their base wouldn't mind less funding for other, different people. When it turned out the feedback was negative, the funds came back.

@Graylight The Special Olympics receives about 100 million a year from private donations.

@GunSmoke9 Not even close. And just because donations help support it in no way exonerates the government from also supporting it, just as they do dozens of other similar programs.
