I just ran some simple numbers.

By the time of slavery's abolition the US had condoned slavery for 88 years (1864-1776).

Around that time the average wage of someone of their occupation was $10/year making the total sum owed in 1864 to be $880.

With inflation that would be worth $22,500 today.

Assuming we literally paid every single African American (which we wouldn't) that means the US would have to give them $945B (based on a population of 42M African Americans).

Given this data, would you accept that $945B is an acceptable sum to pay to finally repay the ancestors of slaves and finally remove the idea of white guilt from US culture?

@MrFreeeeeze New Zealand didn't have slavery. Yes the Maori took slaves but when the British established our nation in 1840 they immediately outlawed it and, within 20 years, completely stopped the practice of it. It also wasn't about race as the Maori took prisoners of any kind, most of which were other Maori.
@Qwerty14 still slavery. Should be repaid.
@MrFreeeeeze Much like only count the US from 1776, I only count New Zealand from 1840. What the tribal Maori did prior to that is not New Zealand's concern.
@Qwerty14 as long as your prepared to clear your conscience for past slavery.
@MrFreeeeeze Trust me, you wanna bring up tribal Maori practises they should feel bad about, POW slave labour isn't even top of the list. They had cannibalism. They nearly wiped out the entire Moriori people. They did wipe out several species of native bird.

But we also recognise they were tribal groups of people, not a civilised nation state with laws and regulations like Britain was. If they were, we'd probably give reparations for their actions. New Zealand has given reparations to the Maori and Moriori for the effects the British colonisers had on them. But I don't think New Zealand should be held accountable for what the Maori did prior to 1840.
@Qwerty14 slavery is slavery

@MrFreeeeeze WhOZ GiveZ a fux
@DonaldTrumpet Qwerty14 does. He's really big on slavery
@MrFreeeeeze So you think the Maori tribes should give one another reparations for taking prisoners and using them for labour? Should they all give each other the same amount? Won't that just be the same as not doing anything? Genuinely curious how you think they should go about it.

Also slavery isn't always the same. For example the Europeans were just fucking racists who thought Africans were subhuman and therefore could be used like beasts of burden. Nothing the Maori did to one another is even remotely racist as they're all Polynesian. It was more a cultural thing.
@Qwerty14 ok listen. Slavery IS slavery. Reasons are always going to vary in every situation. Nothing is identical.

It's up to them how the past can be repaid.
@MrFreeeeeze Great so now we've established that New Zealand didn't have slaves and that the tribal Maori beforehand can work it out amongst themselves, do you have an opinion on the actual topic? US reparations?
@Qwerty14 not really, I actually don't care about the US and this topic.
@MrFreeeeeze Oh you're just bored too then. You're in good company.
