I just ran some simple numbers.

By the time of slavery's abolition the US had condoned slavery for 88 years (1864-1776).

Around that time the average wage of someone of their occupation was $10/year making the total sum owed in 1864 to be $880.

With inflation that would be worth $22,500 today.

Assuming we literally paid every single African American (which we wouldn't) that means the US would have to give them $945B (based on a population of 42M African Americans).

Given this data, would you accept that $945B is an acceptable sum to pay to finally repay the ancestors of slaves and finally remove the idea of white guilt from US culture?

I have no guilt. I think action should be taken make sure things are fair and equal now and moving forward.
@SweetMae That's good you don't feel guilt. Is the action that should be taken reparations?

@Qwerty14 No. Fix the system.
@SweetMae They've tried and failed many many times. Do you not think at least reparations is a way to give them something whilst they wait for the US to care?

@Qwerty14 I have learned on thing over time. Throwing money at problems solves very little. The system will still be broken after the reparations have been disbursed. What will the money solve?
@SweetMae It isn't about fixing the system, just giving them their dues and officially recognising their ancestors were exploited for America's gain

@Qwerty14 They were exploited. They should not have been. It is a sad history. It is time to move forward. What will money change that a deep and sincere apology will not?
@SweetMae Ask them. I'm sure they'll take the money if you gave them the choice haha

@Qwerty14 Where will all this money come from?
@SweetMae the over inflated defense budget over a period of say 10 years. The US pay a lot of taxes. They just put the money into stupid things

@Qwerty14 I can't agree with you there. I know how underfunded the US military is first hand. I hope that someday things will be equal and fair in this country and that we can work together as Americans to help each other along the way.
@SweetMae underfunded? Either your military budget is too high or your military is too costly. Either downsize or cut cost. You guys far exceed any nation on budget and power so you have huge room to move. Seriously, I would be gobsmacked if you needed to spend even 1/7th of the amount t you spend
