I just ran some simple numbers.

By the time of slavery's abolition the US had condoned slavery for 88 years (1864-1776).

Around that time the average wage of someone of their occupation was $10/year making the total sum owed in 1864 to be $880.

With inflation that would be worth $22,500 today.

Assuming we literally paid every single African American (which we wouldn't) that means the US would have to give them $945B (based on a population of 42M African Americans).

Given this data, would you accept that $945B is an acceptable sum to pay to finally repay the ancestors of slaves and finally remove the idea of white guilt from US culture?

only if the rich foot the bill.
@BetweenKittensandRiots The idea would be that everyone pay through taxes. Only fair right?
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Qwerty14 Not fair, because it would involve everyone having to pay for crimes they simply did not commit.
@Qwerty14 Not all white people were land owners or responsible for slavery.
@BlueVeins @BetweenKittensandRiots No it isn't even that. No crime was committed. It is about repairing the damage caused by legal slave trade which the US (and therefore its citizens) is responsible for
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Qwerty14 Different era, different set of citizens. What kind of whacky justice system puts an entire country under the gavel regardless of who was actually responsible?
@BlueVeins Um... You know it happens all the time right? What do you think the UN does half the time haha
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Qwerty14 Even then, those payments are made out to the actual victims of the crime, not to people who look like the victims, and generally aren't divied up by race. And perhaps more importantly, that generally happens when the evil decisions are made by the government, rather than a bunch of individuals living under that government.
@BlueVeins Oh the government used slave labour. Let's not pretend shit got built without it. The White House was built by slaves for crying out loud lol
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Qwerty14 Yeah, that's true. Maybe we should buy those slaves deluxe coffins, if we can still find their bones.
@BlueVeins what about their next of kin??
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Qwerty14 I reccomend we give their next of kin equal protection under law, since they're American citizens and all.
@BlueVeins And the money they would have inherited?
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Qwerty14 6 odd generations later? Even fabulous wealth typically lasts 3 or less, let alone a laborer's salary.
@BlueVeins Well I'm not suggesting we add interest to it, just give the amount due with inflation. So it isnt like it got passed on 6 gens but just skipped 5 gens
