I just ran some simple numbers.

By the time of slavery's abolition the US had condoned slavery for 88 years (1864-1776).

Around that time the average wage of someone of their occupation was $10/year making the total sum owed in 1864 to be $880.

With inflation that would be worth $22,500 today.

Assuming we literally paid every single African American (which we wouldn't) that means the US would have to give them $945B (based on a population of 42M African Americans).

Given this data, would you accept that $945B is an acceptable sum to pay to finally repay the ancestors of slaves and finally remove the idea of white guilt from US culture?

LBJ poured a tons of money into his GREAT SOCIETY - and we can all see how that has panned out - No free anything - this is 2019 we had a black prez - and the debt is not only paid but paid way over.

Years and Years of slavery and then the Jim Crow South right after (which only ended about 60 years ago) and the “debt is overpaid” because we had a black president? Really? There are people still alive and well who grew up in the Jim Crow South (basically institutional slavery). Try telling them that the debt is overpaid. @MarmeeMarch
@MarmeeMarch That's the point. This way it will be officially paid. A one off payment to end the discussion once and for all

@Qwerty14 but it will never end and it will never be enough for some people

What about the millions of immigrants that arrived in the US well after the civil war, so it's now there fault now too, even though they had nothing to do with it?
@DaughterOfTheDust Were they slaves - ? no - ok thanks for your input.
@Niburu Its all gimme gimme - let me see what I can bleed out of the government.

They were held back both socially and economically from advancing as a people and were treated as less than human beings. That was a direct consequence of slavery that was never “paid for” and there are still people alive today who experienced it. In some areas of the country Jim Crow was just as bad as slavery. @MarmeeMarch
@DaughterOfTheDust We are talking about slaves not the "hobbled black" - they have been given the Affirmative Racism -oops Affirmative action grants to leap over the white man for nothing more than the color of their skin. They got that level playing field paved for them and moved ahead of the line with barely passing grades - while WHITEY or the Asian scores nearly perfect marks.

We fought a 4 year battle and lost great president because of slavery.
They were held back - so were many ethnic groups - but the other groups did not burn and riot when a court decision does not go their way - they just accept it and move on -The "Hobbled Black" will always be at a disadvantage as long as he is held bound by the chains of slavery.

So I dont want to hear the Billboard Greatest Hits of the "Hobbled Black" -[c=#003BB2] Slavery / Oppression /Racism [/c] Its all a pile of BS that was true at one time in HISTORY and is gone - esp after we elect BO, a half white half black President.

Your position is that the debt of slavery has been overpaid in this country. How was it overpaid if directly after slavery segregation started to further limit and control black people? Jim Crow ended between 1960 - 1962 (depending on the state because some states refused to end it despite the supreme court decision). That’s 59 - 61 years ago. It has only been approximately 61 years since black people have been TRULY free to live their lives equally like everyone else. It’s not possible to completely level the playing field in only 60 years.
Your affirmative action claim is FALSE. Affirmative action is for all minority groups (asians, mexicans, natives, black people, pacific islanders) and women including white women. Your claim that black people get in on color alone and have barely passing grades is a false argument based on ignorance. Look at the black students who are in Ivy League colleges and you will see that their grades were extraordinary before ever being accepted. They got in on their own intelligence. @MarmeeMarch
@DaughterOfTheDust You can believe that AA myth all you want and until I see some .edu or .gov proof of GPA and admissions, Ill leave that to you to you. And who said that slavery is a debt that had to be repaid ? slavery was the law then when it was not a law any longer they were not slaves most chose to stay as servants but were not required to work as they once did.

It seems that you want to give money to people because they might have had a relative that was a slave - what for ? if there is money to be given it should have been done AFTER the Civil War , right after - not in 2019. How do you even figure out and prove who are the descendants of slaves ? - then the descendants of the people that actually benefited from the labor of a slave. How many did that person own to who is the descendant that owned them. Its impossible to quantify any dollar amount even if such a rediciulus measure would pass. Like I said Jim Crow and seg laws and discrimination are all around us today and not the property of the "Hobbled Black"

Executive Order 10925 (the original AA) and Executive Order 11246 (the AA that is in place right now). Research and read for yourself about what the exact doctrine says on the gov website and research your own statisics. I’m not doing your work for you. Once again, you’re trying to skip over the significance of Jim Crow but you cannot because it was system that LIMITED FREEDOM, slavery ended but black people still were not free until 1962. That’s the point here. Also, my intial reply to this post was against the monetary reparations. @MarmeeMarch
@DaughterOfTheDust You are the one stating all these AA recipients and Blacks going to Harvard with high marks. I am not going to do any lookup of anything I am not your maid.

So what black ppl got civil rights in 62 big deal - and ?? so what is your issue -its too short of a time span ? not fast enough for you ? - I am sorry that they are not brought up to par within seconds but thats the way it is. I could care less to be perfectly honest.
DaughterOfTheDust · 22-25, F
If you could care less then this argument is over and we can both stop wasting our time. @MarmeeMarch
