Funny you should bring India up. It’s not really the principle of the thing - it’s the execution - like when it’s a transparent attempt to decrease turnout by a particular segment of society.

India is a lot more flexible than proponents of voter ID in the states tend to be.
“India allows the use of fifteen different types of identification, ranging from property documents to arms licenses to income tax identity cards. Included, too, are forms of identification most likely to be possessed by the poor.... For instance, voters can present ration cards issued to the poor to allow them to buy food staples and kerosene oil at subsidized prices.”
As mentioned in this thread the federal government is fully experienced in churning out all types of cards. Where I live no I’d is required. I would easily produce any or all of the items you claim are recognized in India (which are more than required in plenty of states in the US).

@jackjjackson Sure. The problem happens when voter ID laws aren’t flexible enough to reflect people’s situation - or are intentionally targeted to affect some particular group. It’s all in how you do it.

Basically, don’t be a dick.
Longtime Republican consultant Carter Wrenn, a fixture in North Carolina politics, said the GOP’s voter fraud argument is nothing more than an excuse.

“Of course it’s political. Why else would you do it?” he said, explaining that Republicans, like any political party, want to protect their majority. While GOP lawmakers might have passed the law to suppress some voters, Wrenn said, that does not mean it was racist.

“Look, if African Americans voted overwhelmingly Republican, they would have kept early voting right where it was,” Wrenn said. “It wasn’t about discriminating against African Americans. They just ended up in the middle of it because they vote Democrat.”
Funny thing is that the voter is laws don’t do what either proponents or critics say they do. They don’t really depress election turnouts very much - most people without IDs don’t vote either. Nor do they prevent fraud - because there is very little of it to prevent.

Interesting. The subject of this thread is the federal government issuing voter ID cards for free to all citizens. One would think no one would object to that. Then there is you. I recommend that you start a thread taking potshots at whoever you want because theta is totally off topic. @QuixoticSoul

@jackjjackson We do these things state by state here in the US - our elections are not overseen or facilitated by the feds. Not sure what you’re suggesting here is even constitutional.

Don’t know. @QuixoticSoul
