If every single American was provided with a voter ID, it wouldn't be voter suppression. The suppression comes into play when voter ID is selectively applied to make it harder for the poor and minorities to obtain one. I'm glad you agree.

@windinhishair how is it hard?
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Deadcutie By limiting the number of places and times they can be obtained, so people without transportation have trouble accessing them. Everyone turning 18 should be automatically registered and given identification as Jack suggests from India's model.

They’re able to churn out social security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, food stamps, draft and other cards so why not?
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@windinhishair I thought drivers licenses were good enough ID and you can get those at any dps at anytime.. even online I think
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@jackjjackson Registering everyone automatically and providing proof in the form of a card would help ensure everyone has the opportunity to vote. How they respond is then up to them.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Exactly. Apparently it isn’t hard. @windinhishair

@Deadcutie Some southern states cut back where you could get an ID for those who didn't drive, to reduce the number of poor and minority voters. It was done specifically for that purpose after part of the Civil Rights Act was struck down by the Supreme Court a few years ago.

The federal government could easily do it like the other cards I listed above. @windinhishair

@windinhishair I can assure in Texas you can get a drivers license or state ID at any Texas DPS office, and I find it hard to believe other states do what you are suggesting they do. Maybe they did 50 years ago, but today? I don’t believe it
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Deadcutie Texas is one state. There are 40 others, including many from Louisiana to Virginia and beyond that do all they can to minimize minority voters. You don't have to believe it, but it doesn't change the facts. Giving everyone a voter ID automatically when they are of age would be a good way to fight it.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
It would also shut up the whiners 😀 @windinhishair
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@windinhishair are there cases of this that can be verified, or is this just truthfulness?
But I’m not opposed to having another form of official ID..
then it will sound cool when they say, papers please!
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@jackjjackson Agreed. Those Republicans who keep blabbering about voter fraud would have even less to go on than they do now. Voting could be easily checked against your ID, and you wouldn't be able to vote in several states if you own property in more than one.
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@windinhishair so if you own property in all 50 you get 50 votes?
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Deadcutie The Trump kids are registered in several states. States don't always do a good job of culling their voter rolls when people move. In theory, it might be possible for people to vote in several locations. In practice, there is little evidence that it is a big problem. Being able to check multiple jurisdictions in real time would prevent even that small possibility.

By the way, Texas had major issues with their voter ID and suppression efforts a few years ago. Their 2012 law was struck down as unconstitutional, then the portion of the Civil Rights Act cited in the ruling was struck down by the Supreme Court, putting voter suppression back in play. In the 2014 election, many people had trouble voting, especially women who would have different names (maiden and married, for example) on their IDs. People who had voted over 50 years with no issues suddenly had to cast provisional ballots. Texas also decided to accept gun registration as a valid ID (because those tend to be Republican voters), but not a valid student ID (because those people tend to be Democratic voters). Different states play all kinds of games to get the results they want.
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@windinhishair I’m referring to state issued ID and drivers license..
If people can’t get their official names corrected on their official documents, then that’s on them... Gunn licenses you gotta provide other verifiable identifications to get one, so in a way they are official, however school IDs aren't verified. They don’t have address and information like that.. they are more for library /school use and to get discounts at places...

I have no problems forcing everyone to have a voters card, we can have a little booklet like my passport, that contains your voter card, drivers license, social security, miniaturized birth certificate, medical insurance and health information, and licenses you acquire for work and stuff.. all in a nice passport like book
