So what makes this Trump Wall Emergency different?

Lots of Emergencies have been declared before by different Presidents. I did a little digging and This is the first time ever that a President has used his emergency powers to push through a project that the Congress had refused to fund as far as I can tell. As such, it really does open up a can of worms for the future. But I am sure it serves Trumps purposes now. Just another distraction.

ahhhhhh...well...you are partly correct.......Congress funded the Secure Fence Act of 2006 that directed "2 layers of reinforced fencing and the installation of additional physical barriers". Under previous administations, Congress did recognize there was a problem at the southern border. President Bush had no reason to use his executive powers.
As for this being a distraction, some might say his entire Presidency is a distraction.....distraction from Politics as normal which might explain why he was elected.

@river52 Yes to all of the above. Seems to me this whole BS session was to focus his rump support on staying mad and not thinking. We wouldnt want people seeing the Emperor has no clothes.

..." staying mad and not thinking"....."Emperor"....now whose posting "just another distraction"?

@river52 Your perspective is welcome. Thats mine.

@river52 Congress presented him with a budget last summer that would have given him MORE funding for a wall than the bill he just signed. Congress IS moving forward, or is at least attempting to.

Trump seems more interested in creating chaos than simply finding reasonable middle ground. He simply delayed signing anything because he assumed that more Republicans would be elected in November.

The emergency declaration is ground-breaking because it's the first time an emergency has been declared for something that has been considered a chronic issue.

His own party doesn't support it. Does that mean nothing? Do his supporters wish for him to be an emperor?

@JoeyFoxx I'll take your word with regards to last summer's budget......sounds like because of the ratio of power before November, there was more of a compromise. So after November, with a shift in power, Congress decides to reduce or eliminate any funding for a wall. and you call that "Congress IS moving forward, or is at least attempting to." ??
Yeah, chaos.....he's blamed for the "MeToo" movement, for the "Blackface" issues, the soon to be disproved assault on that actor.......and the list goes on and on..
Some.....yes, SOME in his own party do not support him. That is how a democracy works.

@river52 funding was NOT eliminated. The conversation about "The Wall" is completely over blown.

The REPUBLICAN mayor of El Paso, TX, a BORDER city has declared numerous times that their issues with crime and illegal immigration started declining BEFORE the wall was enhanced. He has stated numerous times, along with other border community leaders that a better wall isn't actually helpful. They need different types of funding, which WERE included in the new budget bill.

Look, both sides have a limited capacity for compromise. The President has the responsibility to bring out compromise.

In this regard, I though Obama was the worst President we ever had. And he was. Until Trump. Trump makes Obama look like the king of all negotiators.

@JoeyFoxx first off, Republicans never dug is as hard against Obama as the Dems are doing against this President. I believe they have publicly declared that their mission for the next two years is to make sure our President does not pass any legislation that he is behind.

It was reported by the Dems that there would be NO funding for a "Wall"....but yes, they did propose some funding.

The whole border City news is hard to keep up with....but common sense and past Congressional leaders say a physical barrier is needed.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@river52 Are you kidding me? The Republicans kept the Supreme court short a justice for nearly an entire year. The congresses that served while Obama was in office were the LEAST productive in US history. They stonewalled at every opportunity.

I do not forgive Obama for being on a speaking tour half the time instead of trying to create compromise, but make no mistake about it, Mitch McConnell and his ilk have been at this for quite a while. There's a reason Ryan retired from politics. Even he realized the Republicants are fuck-tards.

Not that Shumer and Pelosi are any better.
but common sense and past Congressional leaders say a physical barrier is needed.
We already HAVE physical barriers and very few are objecting to maintaining and reinforcing those areas that need it. But the sea to shining sea wall that Trump has promised is ludicrous. The desert and rocky hills that exist are already an effective barrier.

It's not hard to keep up with it, so long as you read the facts and ignore the nonsense.

@JoeyFoxx True...the Justice situation was delayed.....but I believe that how Politics has worked in the past.

Acording to this, Obama's Congress was NOT the least Productive Congress....
http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/01/25/a-productivity-scorecard-for-115th-congress/
...states that "
only one Congress has chalked up a lower share of substantive legislation than the just-ended 115th. That was the 110th, held after Democrats retook the House and Senate in the 2006 midterms during Republican George W. Bush’s final two years as president. Only 64% of the laws enacted by that Congress were substantive, by our reckoning.

@river52 gotta run......nice chatting with you.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@river52 Go read the story about Congress again... and pay attention to the details.

What it says is that the current Congress has been MORE productive, including substantive bills and that, in fact, the congress from the 112th to the 114th (with Obama) were, IN FACT, the least productive in terms of actual substantive legislation. Don't only look at the share, look at the numbers.

As for the SC... it's a mess that both sides have created. The Democrats are as guilty as the Republicans. But that doesn't make it ok.

I am noting however that you are comfortable no longer talking about the relevance of the wall. It's a red herring conversation that frankly, has NOTHING to do with border security and everything to do with grandstanding.
