Election reform?

This one I think is something both sides can agree on. We do need to reform the way we run our elections. But sadly because the two major parties hold all the power, it's probably one of the hardest possible changes to make.

What reforms do you think are necessary?

Getting rid of the electoral college and move towards proportional representation... The popular vote should determine the president

@Tracos so the Midwest gets no voice in the election?
Tracos · 51-55, M
Of course they do... One citizen, one vote
St0ut · 51-55, M
@Tracos yes. But. If let’s say I am a candidate and I propose to make a law the gives benefits to ny ca fl tx wa or ma ga and va. At the the expense of the mid west I.e nationalize wheat and give it to those citizens. I could win the election.

All citizens as equal in one nation... One citizen, one vote....

@Tracos the electoral college is meant to prevent a tyranny of the majority
St0ut · 51-55, M
@Tracos let me guesss you live on the coast ?
Tracos · 51-55, M
The electoral college was put in place in a time that communication took weeks to get from one coast to another... This no longer applies....

One citizen, one vote
St0ut · 51-55, M
@Tracos no. In your case the Midwest gets no voice.
Tracos · 51-55, M
Of course they do... In equal representation... That's what democracy should be about... Everyone having an equal voice
St0ut · 51-55, M
@Tracos That means the states with more population have a greater voice policies. Steaks with less population will have no voice you can create policies that negatively impact the Midwest without political repercussions

That's what it means to be one nation.... In the meantime you still have a bicameral system of house and Senate to get balance and a judicial system to assure legality.... But in a functioning democracy it's weird that some votes carry different weight then others... Especially if those weights are based on ancient structures and premises...
St0ut · 51-55, M
@Tracos they are not ancient they are current.
Tracos · 51-55, M
I don't agree with that currency... Therefore my suggested reform
St0ut · 51-55, M
@Tracos this is the map of the popular vote of 2016

That is why you need the electoral college. You can’t have a tyranny of the majority

Thank you :) but ... Silly question... Isn't democracy typically about majority rules? The way I see it is that the electoral college by nature means a two party system. Which in turn moves towards deep polarization, when the one always will try to undo what the other does... No possibilities of compromise, always red vs blue. Multi party coalition governments typically show significantly more stable development over government terms
