Why do people tell lies that don't make any sense?

We can all at least understand when people tell lies to get themselves out of a jam (think bill clintoon) but to tell lies just for the hell of it? It suggests something pathological.


It's been reported that cindy mccain claimed she stopped a child trafficking "incident" at the phoenix sky harbor airport.
Police reported that she did call them, they investigated and found there was "no evidence of criminal conduct or child endangerment.


Apparently when cindy mc cain sees a child of one colour accompanied by an adult of another colour she automatically thinks child trafficking. But why lie about it?
