The Republicans have a decision to make at the time. The factors are these. How many Republican voters are Trump rusted on, and how many will go with the party?
How many Republicans will stay home as the Democrats did with Hillary last time? How much mud from Mueller will stick to Trump in time for the Primaries? And how bad will the employment and economic numbers get by then? (There seems to be little doubt the shine is coming off.) Most Republican party members tolerate Trump at best for his voting block. Thats why he is pushing the lines that got him elected where he can. If they crunch the numbers and decide he is a nett liability they will not hesitate to throw him under a bus.
Politics is a heartless business.
