Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution: The president shall...give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."

There's no obligation as to how often or how many times such a speech is to be given. And what would it matter if there was? Trump barely knows the Constitution, much less shows any regard at all for his except for how far his powers extend.

What message can Trump deliver on the "state of the union" other than it's closed for business right now? Wouldn't time be better spent negotiating a deal that works for all rather than remind citizens of what they clearly already know?

In suggesting the speech not be given until a later date (not cancelled) Pelosi is reminding Trump that Congress is a co-equal branch of government and not a tool at his disposal. It also shows him his petty willingness to keep the government locked down until his absolutely non-negotiable demands for a border wall are met is going to have impacts on him, too.

@Graylight working on opening it up on like she was while vacationing in hi over New Year and pr over the weekend

@Mountainlady16 Do you really want to talk about vacation days and days out of the office? Like golfing? Hosting dinners? Endless campaign rallies? Really?

@Graylight and how many during the shutdown? I just wish the president had the power of governor's to hold the legislature in secession til this ends. Pelosi and shummer are just trying to keep their voters rolling in

@Mountainlady16 Shutdown means just that. Empty halls and rooms - that's the consequence of Trump's decision. Incidentally, HI was not a vacation. It was a trip to a known vacation destination to conduct business.

But I shudder to think the President of the United States should stay at his post during a crisis of his own manufacturing.

Please.

@Mountainlady16 “I'm proud to shut down the government for border security. You want to know something? I’ll tell you what: I am proud to shut down the government for border security. I will take the mantle,” Mr. Trump went on. “I will be the one to shut it down — I’m not going to blame you for it.”
President Donald J. Trump.

The Democrats have offered at lease to bills, which the president has either rejected or that his Congress won't even present. On the eve prior to the shutdown, he rejected a bipartisan (both sides worked together and negotiated) bill.

He's been made several offers. He rejects anything and everything that doesn't include full funding for his wall. That's not negotiation. That's idiocy, particulary when the majority of the country doesn't even want it.

@Graylight the wall is necessary
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Mountainlady16 For what? Crime? The vast majority of crimes committed here are done so my American-born citizens. Drugs? 90% of drugs come through legal ports of entry, which a wall would affect in the least. Child trafficking? Gangs? Terrorists? Check your facts on these; they're available almost anywhere.

And illegal immigration is at a historic low right now. So unless it's to "keep America white," what exactly is the necessity of a wall?
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@Graylight historic low but still happening by 1000s a year
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Mountainlady16 And what are the results of this great "crisis?"
