A narcissist who uses an otherwise laudable cause (the promotion of greater transparency from government and powerful interests) to justify behavior that is often self serving (timing "leaks" to undermine people he feels personally wronged by) or dangerously irresponsible (releasing personal information of rape victims or the gay Saudi man who could have been executed by the state as a result). It's a shame because in addition to the harm he sometimes does via poorly redacted or contextualized blasts of information, he actually undermines his stated goals by being an activist who is more interested in his own ego than in the millions of other lives that are affected by his choices in how he pursues his agenda. Given his public persona and behavior, I don't have a hard time believing that he was probably guilty of the sexual assault which he fled from prosecution for as well.

@Auberon89: And realistically speaking think about it. All those journalists really would have done for him is provide legal cover ie someone else to throw under the bus if someone got hurt from the info published.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@Auberon89: As I previously mentioned at best those journalists would be useful legal cover if something goes pear shaped. But given that he has been burned by journalists with agendas trying to hijack things before I can understand why he might make that decision. Also with the dismal state of journalism in the English speaking world I would not trust 95% of the so called journalists to double check a high school paper without supervision. I also have a serious problem with the Swedish government turning their legal system into a kangaroo court because they are spineless vassals to the Americans. They literally shopped around for a prosecutor who would take up a baseless case. They have also consistently lied over and over about the specifics of it and the handling of his case. The UK government is as much to blame for this fiasco. You seem to think I worship the man. I don't. In fact I don't even agree with some of his decisions but I respect him and the principles that motivate his actions.

I also find it very American to assume that because the info relating to US politics does not fit your idea of balance that that somehow means someone who is a citizen from a country on the other side of the planet cares who gets elected or has any interest in influencing the US election. Hate to say it but Washington is not the center of the universe.

Hero. When your government is wrong, it isn't wrong to betray it.

I think he did a good thing. People like to bring up his rape charges in order to discredit him. I think that is a separate issue. Overall I think he did a good thing for Humanity. He brought certain important issues to the world's attention.
Cierzo · M
Yes, and making up a false accusation of rape is not so difficult. It was a funny 'coincidence' that the accusation turned up after he was proven dangerous for the system.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Cierzo: Indeed. It is important to see the bigger picture and who is manipulating it from behind the scenes.

The man is a revolutionary and an icon and proof that one person can make a difference.

I'm sure that, initially, he may have had good intentions somewhere, but he has become a rather malicious actor in the world of whistleblowers and that deeply hurts him and WikiLeaks in my opinion.
Unlike him and the whole lot at WL, I stand with the belief that Edward Snowden is a patriot.

Great hero. And Snowden too.

Definitely not a hero. I think he is stuck and doing people's bidding for protection. What he wanted to stand for is exactly the opposite of what he is doing to survive.

at first he wasa whistle blower, now he's just a rapist available to the highest bidder.
Churchy · 56-60, F

@LvChris: I think comparing war crimes, torture, and extra judicial executions to mishandling classified information is not even the same realm.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@LvChris: Also legally speaking mishandling classified info does not meet the legal standard of treason.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@LvChris: Funny thing is that the current saint of the GOP Ronald Reagan actually did commit treason on the campaign trail.

A rapist who fled from justice and an egocentric who lost his credibility.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
justice and the government aren't even close to the same thing

Sweden, like all countries, has a justice system to determine whether someone has broken the law. JA didn't stick around to face that question.
He has lost his credibility as a crusader of truth. He recently tried to support a rumour about Hillary Clinton using an earpiece during interviews. He did so with a release of a stolen email that mentioned an earpiece. He withheld that the context of the email was her preparing to attend the UN where everyone wears earpieces in order to hear the translations.

Did he have to leak ALL of Hillary Clinton's emails??? Where's the good in that?
ladycae · 100+, F
