The Vietnam War was winnable and that we were winning it.
That lie was perpetuated by two administrations (Johnson and Nixon) from both major parties, and it indirectly led to the downfall of both presidencies. McNamara and others in LBJ’s administration knew it was a lost cause and that the US was far from winning anything but continued the charade to the point that they lost credibility with the public to such a degree that it became obvious that LBJ wouldn’t only lose the general election but could likely not even retain the Democratic Party nomination in 68. Nixon and his administration continued the lie whilst looking for a backdoor exit to get out of it. Had it not been for Ellsberg’s whistleblowing with the Pentagon Papers, we may have never learned how long that lie had been perpetrated. To add insult to injury, the same group of people who broke into Ellsberg’s psychiatrist’s office in an attempt to discredit Ellsberg would later be the same group who broke into the DNC at Watergate, and we all know how that ended. That one lie caused tens of thousands of deaths and had ripple effects that took down two presidents. I can’t think of one that was bigger than that.
