What will Pence be indicted for?

As I recall from the Watergate days, when Nixon was named as an "unindicted co-conspirator", a President can be indicted (but not impeached) for things he did prior to becoming president, and he can be impeached (but not indicted by the justice department) for what he does after taking office. In the former case, he would not go to trial until after his term was over.
If Trump were to be impeached and actually convicted by a Republican-led Senate, I think the only way then-President Pence could be kicked out of office would be that he too would be impeached and convicted by the Senate. I find that unlikely.
On the other hand, some legal scholars think this is not so clear cut.
