Not a coincidence, but not all that important either. Where else would they be heading in the Azov? Not like those ships could have any real impact on the ground side situation in any case.
This was completely manufactured. Ukrainians are trying to drum up international support and provoke the Russians, while the Russians want to demonstrate that yes, they do control the strait, and expect everyone to announce intention before crossing.
