Brits. vote traditionally on a Thursday so that the result can be known early hours Friday.
The House of Commons website suggests this is just a tradition so that there is still one working day in the week left for the incoming Prime Minister to select his cabinet before assuming the Parliamentary role first thing Monday morning.

Of course, that doesn't sit with the Civil Service whose job it is to actually do the Ministerial work elected MP's and Prime Ministers say they're going to do !
Traditionally Civil Servants and Bankers and later, Financiers, ALL traditionally ONLY worked Monday to Friday. So any new Prime Minister wouldn't get to meet any of his departments heads until first thing Monday morning.
But as we all know, money and business stops for no-one !
