Why won't Trump just lead?

He should be able to present leadership that will get everyone working together for common goals. Why won't he do that?

I dislike the man, but he is leading in his own way. Bringing everyone together is going to take more than one person and mostly be caused by something like 9/11
@Turtlepower A Cat 4 heading for the Eastern Seaboard is pretty big, though.

@MistyCee Not big enough to unite people for a significant period of time. Sadly acts of nature typically get forgotten quickly
@Turtlepower True dat, but this timing is pretty significant, and the aftermath may still be newsworthy through the beginning of November.

@Turtlepower I just mean in general, not specific to his upcoming vainglorious speeches on TV after people's lives are destroyed by Florence.

We're approaching the midway point of his term and he has yet to demonstrate any kind of leadership and getting Congress to work towards common goals that are beneficial to the population.
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@daisymay my point is the same. No president in recent memory has been able to do that. It's because our country as a whole is so divided. By your definition Obama was a bad leader too, and others before him.
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
My point wasn't about speeches about natural disasters, it was the people are divided to the point we need something to happen on a large scale that nearly everyone is against in order to unify us.

@Turtlepower I seem to recall Obama was able to lead us out of a huge recession. I also remember Bitch McConnell wondering why Obama wouldn't lead while simultaneously refusing to work with Dems at all on any subject. He wanted his prophecy of limiting Obama to one term to come true and it didn't. His feelings got hurt.

So, since it was SO important to Bitch, I am just wondering why Trump won't lead?
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@daisymay because no president does. Obama didn't lead us out of a recession. What did he do that ended it? What policies changed that made it happen? He made reactive changes to prevent the loan collapsing from happening again and preventing the same thing from happening again is great but it doesn't fix the current problem.
daisymay · 51-55, T
@Turtlepower The current problem? Is not the economy the "greatest" under Trump?

We're getting sidetracked here. I posit that Obama, by far, possessed more leadership because he could actually produce it. We've seen nothing from Trump that would suggest he can.

As others have pointed out, the real answer to my question is that it is an impossibility for Trump, not that no PotUS would be able to.
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@daisymay Your argument is weak and flawed and simply based on disliking him. Your disdain for the Trump is certainly warranted, but Obama didn't reach across the aisle to get things done (successfully). Then you cited something he didn't influence as proof. Your overall statement is valid but your logic isn't. Partisan politics neuters real leaders. Obama was capable of being a real leader but most of his presidency was neutered by conservatives. Edit: however i do agree that even if our government didn't work against the people Trump would be a piss poor leader. I just dislike bad logic.
daisymay · 51-55, T
@Turtlepower Please explain how having control of all three branches of the federal government is tantamount to Trump being "neutered" in the same manner that kept Obama from being the leader that you say he was not?
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
Democrats controlled the government for Obama's first couple of years. Neither side wants to actually work together. They each want their way. A true leader bridges that gap, and no president has been able to do that in a long time. The entire country needs a lesson in conflict management.
@Turtlepower Obama did attempt to reach across the aisle in the beginning, and made concessions that risked alienating those on the left. He was much more of a moderate than many would’ve liked. But the GOP neither respected nor was willing to cooperate with those efforts.
daisymay · 51-55, T
@Turtlepower I see, so we'll be equating unprecedented obstruction/slow-walking of 3/4 of another guy's term with 0 of this one and lament how "no one" could lead with that. Thanks for the clarification.

How much of it did Boehner get on the ACA compromise? 98%, but still not enough. Leaders don't capitulate 100% of their goal. That anyone would expect that is nothing short of ridiculous.
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@bijouxbroussard Agreed. I edited the post to say successfully. That is why I say neutered by the way our government works. Rather than collectively working towards solutions, the legislative branch just wants to be reelected repeatedly. Obama certainly tried and helped pass the ACA which is controversial to people on both sides of the aisle. Obama was certainly better than Trump and did try, but Trump isn't more of a bad leader because he doesn't "get everyone working together for common goals". No president effectively pulls that off is the point.

@daisymay I enjoyed this discussion with you. Thank you for not turning things personal. I see more logic in your responses to me than the simple quip in your OP. Have a good night
