Washington Post Blog on Times OP-ED

Listen to certain cable news precincts, and the shock value of running an anonymous op-ed becomes clear. “An extraordinary thing just happened,” MSNBC’s Chuck Todd said at the top of his daily show. He called the piece “unprecedented.”

So what? Like most anonymous quotes and tracts, this one is a PR stunt. Mr. Senior Administration Official gets to use the distributive power of the New York Times to recast an entire class of federal appointees. No longer are they enablers of a foolish and capricious president. They are now the country’s most precious and valued patriots. In an appearance on Wednesday afternoon, the president pronounced it all a “gutless” exercise. No argument here.

So, the WashPo hired a media critic to criticize the NYT for hype? Hmmm. Maybe they're in competition?

@MistyCee Maybe. But it's more likely that when they hired him years ago it was to criticize Fox News.

@MistyCee He's an employee of the WaPo, who wrote an OpEd and the WaPo published it.

I kind of agree with his conclusions, specifically that "Deep Load", is not doing this out of the goodness of his own heart, but because he thinks the ship is sinking, and he wants to say "hey, I was doing everything I could to save it, but the Captain went nuts".

The right thing to do, is to step out of the shadow, name his co-conspirators, and explain the many ways Trump is a disaster. His "if I was not here, there will be chaos, you're welcome America", is self-serving.

I do not fault the NYT for publishing it though. Should the NYT, and WaPo, not have published what it was getting from Deep Throat, even though they knew he was the deputy director of the FBI? They know very well, that someone can reveal things anonymously, but has vested self-interest. Deep Throat, knew that, and he took it to his grave.
@eli1601 politics and individual outfits aside, it's nice to see stuff like this.

@Northwest I find the Op Ed unnerving. It proves the Constitution does not work. Individuals who were not voted in (as president) are, in fact, running the country.

They are not disclosing themselves because Trump is fulfilling THEIR agenda.

It's clear the individual(s) is/are Conservative Republicans. The very people Trump ran against - The so called Swamp.

Days like this, I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

@woolenmittens You get what you voted for. I agree with you, the traditional GOP could not believe its luck when Trump won. They get to pass the blame the "crazy guy", in the meanwhile, their agenda is getting through.

Sessions, even with all the shit the President throws his way, has done the most damage (from my perspective). The same goes for the EPA Administrator, the Sec. of Education, the Sec. of Energy, Immigration policy, white power, etc.

They think they can contain him, but I am not sure this is the case, or that a single NYT anonymous OpEd, will allow them to redeem themselves, and I agree that the NYT should have done its own OpEd, in response to the OpEd, but the WaPo beat them to it.

They, however, unleashed the Genie, and their calculus may not be on point. Look at what happened to Iran, when the intellectuals/middle class, thought they can use Kohemini, to fight the Shah, and when the Shah is overthrown, they can swoop in and take power. I mean, who's going to follow this simpleton, extremist, unpredictable, religiously extreme Khomeini, right?
