@Subsumedpat Lol Bernie is barely left wing, please. In Europe he'd be considered directly center.

@Johnson212 Maybe you should look into American history a bit more. Bernie's policies are like that of FDR. FDR saved America during the depression. European social-democrats are the same Keynesian economics and systems as championed by FDR.

@basilfawlty89 That FDR got us out of the depression is something that every Democratic president from Truman to Obama seems do believe and they used his New Deal as a model for expanding the government. But it simply is not true.

Even the Keynesians you mentioned said that while his policies helped to improve the damage done by the great depression Roosevelt never spent enough to bring the economy out of recession, that did not happen until the start of World War II, it was only then that the unemployment rate dropped below 10%.

The stock market crash, bank failures, reduction in purchasing across the board, american economic policy with Europe, drought conditions and the interaction with the long term debt cycle is what gave us the depression. FDR’s new deal addressed some of the symptoms but not the causes, so to say he saved us from the depression is not supported.

More accurately it could be said he was president during the recession and was president when we began to come out of it because of the run up to WW II. It is just correlation not causation.

There is a phenomenon in american politics where the public gives credit to a President if things go right when he is in office and blame when things wrong irrespective of whether he was the cause or not.

My biggest worry is that we are on a track to where we are unable to pay for the social benefits we provide now with these programs becoming insolvent if you do the math so how is increasing this debt going to fix anything.
