The most fundamenral dividing line in politics is the distiction between those with wealth and power and those without it.

In the US, it's a mixed bag, at the top level. Obama, Clinton, Reagan, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, Eisenhower, did not come from "wealth". Bush, Kennedy, FDR, did.

The individual/corporate wealth, however, plays a role behind the scenes. It does not have to be the industrial complex. For instance, the wealth behind Obama, was Hollywood, and people with money, but without an "industrial" agenda (high tech $Bs).

Trump, obviously, is a different story.
