Trump is in London and there is a yuuuge demonstration planned for tomorrow.

Do any of my fellow Brits like Donald Trump? How do Americans feel about the demo?

Obama was an arsehole coming here and saying we go to back of queue, lost all respect for him
@Nyloncapes What are you talking about ?
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
Bijoux when Obama come to UK and said that , if we leave the eu
abe182 · 46-50, M
@Nyloncapes he was a DOUCHE!! You have my apologies.
@Nyloncapes Basically he discouraged Brexit ?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes Obama did do that during the EU ref campaign. He probably shouldn't have got involved. However, he was generally respected in the UK and his visits got no protests
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard Yes and I agree with him but a lot of people felt it was like the big shot American telling Brits what do. People who really like Obama would vote remain anyway.

@Burnley123 Context.

It happened, when Obama was giving a press conference with Cameron, and was addressing why he felt justified taking a position on Brexit, because the Brexit supporters, claimed that it would be a lot easier for the UK to negotiate a trade deal with the UK, if it exits the Euro.

What he did not say, is that he's also doing it to support Cameron.
@Burnley123 Yes, I do remember thinking, “perhaps he should stay out of that”. It’s certainly not like Trump holds his tongue about what he thinks other countries should be doing. This situation with NATO has been proof of that. Of course then there’s land Trump reportedly bought up in Scotland—for golfing, was it ? I understand they weren’t thrilled about it, either.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Northwest Yes but he did fly over here to make that case. He did like Cameron a lot, unfortunately.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard I hope Trump starts laying into Jeremy Corbyn. The Labour vote would go up by 5%

@Burnley123 He laid into May pretty good. I could not believe the interview he gave. I am holding my breath, trying to guess what's going to happen Friday daytime. Should be very interesting.

He wants Boris Johnson as PM.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Northwest I've read that. 🤣 Obviously Trump is an utterly unreliable ally and May was foolish for doing this.
Northwest · M
@Burnley123 The joint press conference, is supposed to be any minute now. The podiums are set up.

I believe those expecting a "Love Actually" moment, will be disappointed. May is going to suck it up, and not say much. We've always worked with Britain on influencing the political systems of other countries. We've had hours influenced by the Russians. The British are now experiencing what it feels for the shoe to be on the other foot.

One thing for sure, our President is no longer pretending, with his attack on London's Mayor.

@Northwest The British ruling class has a long history of craven behaviour in the face of American power and this visit wouldn't happen otherwise. British Conservatives do not like Trump and their political culture is similar to that of American 'establishment' Conservatives. Tory MPs from the culturally Liberal remain wing would definitely prefer Obama to Trump.

However, he is President of America and British leaders derive tremendous self worth from the 'special relationship' with America, which translates as Britain being an obedient mid sized proxy for American foreign policy at all times and in all circumstances. This is also how we got into the Iraq War under Blair.

This is embarrassing for May but it won't end her. Her whole premiership has been embarrassing: from calling an election to increase her majority which decreased her majority, to props collapsing behind her during a speech, to cabinet resignations and the Brexit shambles.

Most Tory MPs hate Boris because they (correctly) view him as a feckless shyster. All Tory MPs despise Jeremy Corbyn and see him as a leftist anti christ. So no, they do not want a leadership contest or an election right now. May is the person they agree to dislike the least and its her job to negotiate Brexit and then take the inevitable blame when it goes badly. Her poor judgement and weak leadership skills are known and already factored in, so the Trump debacle is highly unlikely to end her. Its just one more embarrassment.

@Burnley123 The joint press conference is still on. They're in the Q&A portion.

It turns out the whole thing is a simple misunderstanding.

Trump was misquoted, and the whole thing is fake news. He repeated it several times. He said that he has the recordings to prove it. No word on when he will release these recordings.

He did not take questions from CNN, and said "CNN is fake news, I do not take questions from CNN".

He's now talking about his uncle, a former MIT professor, and reminding us that he used to talk "nuclear" to him, so he knows nuclear.

May is simply avoiding all the questions, and providing canned responses. In response to awkward questions, or situations, we say something like "How about those Mets, or Cubs, or Mariners". What's the equivalent in England?

As an aside, it also turns out that everything bad that's ever happened, is Obama's fault and all good things are thanks to Trump's Presidency.

@Northwest So predictable all round
Northwest · M
@Burnley123 May shut it off, finally.

I especially loved the Merkel Dead Cat, when it got too uncomfortable, and Trump cut in with "but what about Merkel....". He repeated his lie about "Germany getting 50%, 60%, and I heard maybe 70% of its energy needs from Russia", and the $B's going to Germany. May sort of nodded her head, and tried to steer the conversation away from Merkel.

@Northwest trump is a professional moron, apparently nothing can be done about it
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Northwest I feel sorry for her even though I'm in the enemy tribe. 🤣
