Will the real England please stand up?
Southgate's football team or Brexit Britain?
That England's World Cup adventure is happening at exactly the same time as the Brexit clusterfudge is surely the mother of all ironies. I do not know Gareth Southgate's politics but he just looks like liberal remain voter. I could be wrong and I am basing this off little but I certainly can't imagine him down the Dog and Duck pub reading the Daily Express and moaning about foreigners stealing our jobs. He leads a multi-racial team of young working-class men who are well organised, play entertaining attacking football and represent Britain well on the global stage. The man who was once a hate figure for missing a penalty is now a leading fashion icon and has actually impressed the world sporting public with his urbane intelligence and openness to new ideas.
Then we have the Tory Government. And we have Brexit. Here we have a team of privately educated middle-aged white men who are arguing with each other because the crazy belligerent thing we signed up to is not quite crazy and belligerent enough. Having conned the public with known lies about phantom NHS funding, exaggerated immigration stats and nostalgic promises of a lost Britain that they would never even support; they have turned on each other and torpedoed their own Brexit process.
Britain's chief negotiator resigns, Europe sticks its head in its hands and nobody has a clue what is happening. Our Prime Minister might quit because she is the only one in the room who has been forced to realise that telling johnny foreigner to stick it does not work during a complex negotiation process with someone who is five time bigger than you. Michael Gove famously said that this country has had enough of experts and the Tory Government clearly have no problem at all with that part of their mantra.
I've been commenting more on football than on politics recently. TBH I think I'll stick to that. 🤣
