But Americans pay for that in other ways: more car repairs because of shitty roads and overreliance on cars; more college debt because of lack of subsidization of higher ed; more money set aside to cover medical expenses that are covered in other places.

Ever been to Europe? Longer wait times. Taxes. ..Europe taxes everything by a lot. Why should I subsidize college? Oh, yeah...more taxes.

@FITMIKE70 Yes, I have. Plenty. Non essential procedures have waiting times. Newsflash: it happens here too. And often in serious cases. And often due to insurance companies deciding a procedure is “elective”.
