When is insulting people justified in a debate?

By that I mean calling someone an idiot or implying that they are.

It's never justified in a debate

@InOtterWords Never. Are there any circumstances though? Genuine question.
I have often felt like it, and may sometimes retaliate but it is far better to tell someone that you won't engage with someone who cannot make a point without resorting to insults. Someone who was a friend did this to me on here and I stopped engaging with them. In private I clearly told them that I would never insult them like that, and to make a point their is no need to get personal, and then I blocked him. @Burnley123

@InOtterWords Sad to hear that. I do take the piss out of people who are rude to me. Not insults per say but put downs. Does this make me a bad dude?
No, I do that. You must have seen me when I get into gun control debates :)

@InOtterWords I've never seen you in one. I know you as a Spurs fan and a Mum. 😎
And an otter lover....you can't have missed the otters?

@InOtterWords No but it confuses the fuck out of me. Otters are OK though. 😎
When I had my breakdown three years ago I used to cut out pics of animals, it helped calm me. Then it became googling them and I discovered what amazing creatures otters were.
