Border Patrol will stop referring migrant parents who cross into the U.S. illegally with children for prosecution, official says

WaPo:

The U.S. Border Patrol will no longer refer migrant parents who cross into the United States illegally with children to federal courthouses to face criminal charges, a senior U.S. Customs and Border Protection official told The Washington Post on Thursday.
The about-face comes just one day after President Trump signed an executive order ending his administration’s widely denounced practice of separating parents and children apprehended for illegally crossing the Mexico border. Trump’s order said the government would maintain a “zero tolerance” policy toward those who break the law, but the senior U.S. official, asked to explain how the government would change enforcement practices, said Border Patrol agents were instructed Wednesday evening to stop sending parents with children to federal courthouses for prosecution.

How fast do those wheels backpedal?
We're all being played.

Separating a few hundred kids and putting them in pens is all political theater. For both sides of the border.

It can be terminated instantly as it has no real impact beyond political bargaining, fear, and bitterness.

separate -> prosecute -> deport

versus

-> deport

They're going back either way. We're just skipping the first part now.

It's all bullshit because nobody is doing anything substantial about the problem. And they're not going to because we have to keep giving a wink and a nod to illegal immigration for agricultural and construction work.

I sort of see illegal border crossing like being hacked. The failure is ultimately on us.

Sounds like someone realized they were stepping over a red line with their fascism, but we shall see how it plays out.

Wow. So, Trump has no spine and his heart was just temporarily stopped, but its better now?

I don't buy this one as masterful ruling by chaos. Sounds to me like he's just in way over his head being President and is still learning on the job.

Sending Meliana to investigate, though, at least seems like some sort of damage control.

DOJ denies it.

More chaos and confusion. @LegendofPeza

@softspokenman Chaos and confusion indeed. One article did say:

There’s some wiggle room between the DOJ statement and the anonymous official’s claim: Government prosecutors could still be following a “zero tolerance” policy for individual cases referred to them, but it could be the case that border agents, whose agencies fall under the Department of Homeland Security, have been ordered not to refer certain cases to prosecutors.

If folks at the White House & DOJ have truly gotten a message to CBP this quickly, it's a new land-speed record for this administration.

Did the definition for illegal change ?
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Jibby No, I think better minds remembered the concept of proportional response.
That should stop illegal immigration. 🤔

what are they going to do with them instead ?
