It's not about free speech. He could easily have reported on it from his home or a couple of blocks away or anything. Many media outlets had already reported on it. They just weren't allowed to film at the court as is common in British law because they don't want anyone to prejudice the trial. He knew what he was doing, knew it was illegal and deliberatly broke the law in order to cause outrage.
