What are some things the U.S. government can do to pay off the nation’s 21 trillion dollar debt?

It's quite simple, actually.

We start by saving or raising taxes so that one penny is put away on the first day.

Then we double that savings/revenue each and every day from that of the day before.

In 52 days we'll have a surplus of a trillion dollars.

Doing that is no more impossible (or possible) than any other ideas anyone can come up with.
