I dont care that Trump is a complete Pig.

I really don't. Nor do I care that he is a total horror of a human being, uncivilized, ill mannered, barely literate, liable to tantrums. None of that.
Nor do I care that he surrounds himself with sycophants, second rate at best and unable to tell the truth or even make up a cogent lie. I don't care that he is a liar, a fraudster, a cheat and a serial adulterer. Nor do I care that he is a moral and physical coward for dodging the draft with phony bone spurs or getting others to do his dirty work over and over. I don't even care that he blatantly pushes an agenda to make the rich richer while the people he wooed get nothing. That is their own stupid fault for believing the Myth of America.
I simply wish he would be a sensible president and have a single direction to point in. to give those who voted for him and those who are watching a great nation twitch and spasm this way and that like an epileptic having a seizure, some sense of where the nation is headed.. It was funny at first. Then it was sad. Now it is tragic.

You simply wish he would be a sensible president and have a single direction to point in? You are indulging in a vain hope there, I'm afraid.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
So it seems.. But its pretty hard to made any kind of progress when no one is pulling in the same direction as anyone else, or the same as last week@NankerPhelge
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Well, that's the kind of guy Trump is. He couldn't pull in one single direction if his life depended on it. However did he become President of the USA?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
I don't think he did. I think Clinton was so "on the nose" that she lost, leaving him last man standing..@NankerPhelge
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman What do you mean?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
He only won because people could not bring themselves to vote for her.. And I can see how that could be..@NankerPhelge
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Why couldn't people bring themselves to vote for Hillary? I would have voted for her if I lived in the States.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Skipping over the noise of her shady dealings and emails. She represented the Status quo, even saying her administration would be "business as usual". Since the USA has been busy going down the economic crapper for the past 30 years, more of the same was definitely not the answer.. They have been putting off another grand recession ever since the GFC and its on its way..@NankerPhelge
@NankerPhelge People were more willing to accept ugly rumors about Hillary than ugly facts coming from Trump's own mouth. I think the misogyny that still exists here was a factor.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard Yet American movies don't reek of misogyny, quite the opposite. Why can't America live up to Hollywood's glamourised image of it, then it would come close to making the so-called American Dream become something resembling reality? How come they don't have the logic to think of that? Hollywood aside, I still didn't think of America as being a misogynistic country for other reasons.

And why would they accept anything an asshole like Trump says?
@NankerPhelge Hollywood is not real. Even actresses who portrayed strong women onscreen were having to deal with people like Harvey Weinstein and sexual assault, the "casting couch" behind the scenes.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard Yet, so many Americans are brainwashed by its glamourised image of the USA, one would think they'd all get together to hopefully make it more real. Know what I mean?
@NankerPhelge I think most Americans (who live here) know that what they're seeing onscreen has little connection with what they're experiencing on a daily basis.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I know what you are saying, bijoux, but the reality of the matter needn't be that way. As you may have gathered from my postings all over this site, I am what could be described as a logical idealist. I have also formed the impression that a lot of Americans are idealists deep down inside. We all know that Hollywood isn't real, but there is no reason why it can't be manifested into something more closely resembling reality. Those who have an idealised view of America probably know what I'm saying, all they need is to do something positive about it. What they need is role models, and that's why I keep bringing Hollywood into it, because it is rife with role models. So why don't the people imitate those role models more?
room101 · 51-55, M
@NankerPhelge "religion... is the opiate of the masses." Karl Marx 1843.

In the case of America, Hollywood is and has always been, the opiate of the masses. It reinforces the idealised version of America that all want to believe in. But, just like any opiate, it lulls them into a stupor of inactivity.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@room101 I suppose there is that to it. But if they'd all got up off their lazy asses 40 years ago, the American Dream might have become reality by now.
@NankerPhelge You don’t understand, and characterizing us as “lazy” is incredibly unfair. Most of us are just trying to survive.
room101 · 51-55, M
@NankerPhelge 40 years ago???? That's only 1978! No mate, they need to go back way before that lol
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I'm not saying ALL Americans are lazy, I'm sure most of them are not. The ones I was describing as lazy are the ones who have allowed themselves to be lulled into a stupor of inactivity.
room101 · 51-55, M
@NankerPhelge Absolutely.
@room101 Hollywood, at its core, is simply someone telling a story. In some cases it’s how they wish things were, in others, how they remember things being. Unless it’s a documentary (and often even then) it’s purely subjective. That people go to the movies to escape reality implies that they’re not the same thing.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard You are right, but even so I still don't think it's impossible to make things into how we wish they were. Faith in human nature combined with determination can move mountains.
room101 · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard In essence, I agree. However, there are two points that I'd like to make.

First, when I use the word "Hollywood", it's a generic term which I use to encompass both TV and cinema.

Second, as a foreigner (ie not an American), I am always dumbfounded by how often we see everything from a purely American perspective and how often we see the American flag in any production. Surely this must have some kind of subconscious effect on American viewers.
@NankerPhelge We can’t even agree on what that is here, now. I used to think that it was obvious that equal rights and opportunities for all people regardless of their gender, color, ethnicity, religion or age was something we could all agree upon. And more and more I’m shouted down as a “deluded liberal” or “socialist” by many of my countrymen.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I think you have just about hit the nail on the head there, bijoux. The only thing that's stopping equal rights and opportunities for all people regardless of their gender, colour, ethnicity, religion or age from being something you could all agree upon is attitude. If everybody had adopted the right attitude, it could have been achieved by the time I was born. It's those assholes who shout you down as a “deluded liberal” who are to blame. They are the real obstacles to the realisation of the idealised America I keep referring to. How do they feel about being such an embarrassment to their homeland?
room101 · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard That's because many of your countrymen a) don't know what any of those words actually mean and b) see liberalism and socialism as derogatory terms.

Sorry Bijoux, I hate to sound like I'm dumping on America. I really do love your country. Sadly, the nastier elements seem to be in the ascendancy at the moment.
