Why are people willing to sacrafice long term benefits to get short term success??

We are in piles of debt... Close to a breaking point. We are voting for politicians to bring money out of thin air to make life easier for those who recieve benefit. Do things with no money just debt. It makes no sense? If u want long term sucess you have to sacrafice short term goals. Smh
