Tariffs On China
Trump just signed an order, imposing tariffs on China. The details will be published in 15 days, but they are expected to cover 1,300 Chinese "products".
The justification, is intellectual property theft.
I agree. China, has engaged in wholesale intellectual property theft, and they should be punished for it. The problem, is that Trump, has positioned China, as the key partner in his war of words against N. Korea, and he made sure everyone knew it, via his tweets, 2020 campaign speeches, and bragging, thereby taking away one of our key negotiating cards.
Not the kin of thing, you want to do, if you're trying to cut a deal.
Most importantly though, there is no coherent strategy, on how to deal with the impact this going to have on us, as China transforms into a consumer of products, rather than a producer.
Also, the claim that China never invented anything, is bogus, and outdated. In several key areas of tech, including AI, semiconductors, nano technology, and wired/wireless communications and the digital economy, China now leads.
It was amusing to watch the WH block the Broadcom / Qualcomm deal, only because Broadcom started out life, as a US company. Started by a couple of UCLA Professors and for years headquartered in Irvine, CA. Both founders non-Chinese.
I would like China to pay for its past transgressions, but Trump took this card away. Are you prepared to shell out that tax cut, to pay for what it's going to cost you to pay for clothes, dishes, knives, forks, shoes, and iPhones?
What about the farmers in the Midwest, who will now ne blocked from selling their products to China?
