What's the point of democracy?

Both Tory and Labour party leaders supported Remain campaign. I thought opposition parties are supposed to provide alternatives to the ruling party. When three biggest parties in Britain united to support Remain, what does that tell you about the facade that is democracy?

Well, even though all the major parties were pulling for remain, the people still voted to leave.

So while I agree that party politics are a sham, I'd argue that in this case, democracy actually worked as intended. The parties didn't decide, the people did.
