I think the vote on Europe was a strange one with MP's seemingly able to take up what position they wanted regardless of their party policy. But your point is a good one. Increasingly the three parties seem to take very similar positions on issues so there is a genuine lack of constructive debate and discusison of alternatives.

Well, even though all the major parties were pulling for remain, the people still voted to leave.

So while I agree that party politics are a sham, I'd argue that in this case, democracy actually worked as intended. The parties didn't decide, the people did.

I think it says more about the facade of what THEY and WE perceive Europe to be all about.
UK politicians have a love/hate relationship with the E:U. They always have !
But this vote...a daft idea from a sitting prime minister, just proves the point about what our MP's think and what the country thinks, and the vast disconnect between the two !

Ideally that is supposed to be the case.

It is a facade, giving a false illusion to people that they decide.

That leave was a really bad idea? Opposition parties aren't supposed to disagree on literally everything.

I don't think true democracy has ever existed. The ancient Greece slaves or women couldn't vote. With regards to the Brexit vote, it was won by the newspapers spreading misinformation for their own benefit using xenophobia as their messenger. It's Shameful.
