What is a assault weapon? What makes it one?
ladycae100+, F
@jackson55 ak47, able to shoot multiple bullets quickly instead of having one bullet per shot. there fancier definitions if you google it.
jackson55M
@ladycae So any semi automatic rifle is a assault weapon?
ladycae100+, F
@jackson55 you'd have to look that up but i would think so, however i am not 100% sure.
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@jackson55 I think some groups define it as an assault weapon if it holds ammunition magazines holding more than ten rounds.
jackson55M
@ladycae It seems that the appearance makes the difference not how many bullets it can fire. Look up the AR15 the shooter used and then a Ruger mini14. Both semi automatic rifles. both shoot .223 bullets, you can get 30 round magazines for both. The AR looks like something the military might use and the Ruger looks like a hunting rifle. So the AR is bad because it looks a certain way, the Ruger is ok because it looks like a hunting rifle.
jackson55M
@SimplyTracie I think some groups consider any gun that shoots bullets a assault weapon.
ladycae100+, F
@jackson55 no a single shot hun is never considered an assault weapon. you'd need to give me a cite on that one.
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@jackson55 I鈥檓 talking about the IACP. They鈥檙e against semi-automatic assault weapons.
jackson55M
@SimplyTracie And once again what defines a assault weapon? There are many semi automatic guns, and many that hold more than 10 rounds. Does one actually need a semi automatic gun? Probably not. For hunting, if you miss the first shot you probably wont get a chance to make the second. The big question IS, how did Cruz get his hands on a AR15 and the 6 other guns he bought without the red flags coming up?
jackson55M
@ladycae Yes, but there are shotguns that will hold 5 or 6 rounds. And if it's home protection you want it's the best gun to have.

Definition of assault rifle
: any of various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK-47) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire; also : a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire

@jackson55 I answered that question. It depends on who you ask.

But I agree with you. There is no need for semi-automatic weapons. Thing is, I won鈥檛 be convinced that I need any type of gun. People have told me I need a gun because criminals have guns. That鈥檚 the most ludicrous response ever.
ladycae100+, F
@SimplyTracie i also see o reason to have a gun unless you hunt and i don't hunt with a gun, i hunt with a camera. but i also understand that for some people guns are a part of their personality. it will take a generation or two for that to change. at least with a pistol, someone can only kill 1 or 2 people before others realize what is happening and can take cover.
jackson55M
@ladycae Yes, I know that. AK47's are not legally available to the public. Fully automatic guns have been illegal since the 30's. The AR15 is a semi automatic gun, as are many others. What happened is a absolute tragedy. I think the big question here is how did Cruz get his hands on a AR15 and the 6 other guns he bought? That kid has had mental issues for years. Why did no red flags come up when he was buying guns?
ladycae100+, F
you keep adding that. are you trying to make a point?
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@ladycae Yeah, that鈥檚 true. Hopefully things will change in the future. There is a slight chance
jackson55M
@ladycae Everyone seems to blame the gun, the NRA or anyone else they can point a finger at. It seems the system dropped the ball, Cruz should have never been allowed to own a gun.
ladycae100+, F
@jackson55 i have no idea if he should , shouldn't or does and/or why/
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@jackson55 Why do you say that?
ladycae100+, F
i just realized who ted cruz is. he shouldn't even be allowed to own a spork
SimplyTracie26-30, F
@ladycae Hahahah, why?
MethDozerM
@jackson55 Sporterized AK-47, AKM, and Ak-74 in semi-auto only configurations are indeed available to the public.
For the first question an "assault weapon" is a rifle designed to take detachable box magazines and capable of selective fire in an intermediate range (not intermediate power) rifle caliber.

Nor were automatic weapons made illegal in 1930's. They were made to require a one time $200 BATFE transfer tax stamp.
JP111936-40, M
@jackson55 I agree with what you said, Cruz should never have been allowed to own a gun; however, it was perfectly legal for him to buy one. That鈥檚 part of the problem. I do think the NRA deserves some blame for that because they fight most reasonable gun laws and pay politicians not to make them.

Another part of the problem is that if he had only had a handgun or a shotgun, he wouldn鈥檛 have been able to kill 17 people before getting caught. Why does anyone outside the military need a gun that fires so many rounds without having to reload as an AR15? Sure, Cruz is to blame for killing those people, but you can鈥檛 deny that he wouldn鈥檛 have been able to kill so many without that type of gun. For public safety, it should at least be extremely difficult to get one of those.
MethDozerM
@JP1119 That's not the gun you have issue with then, it's magazine capacity.
JP111936-40, M
@MethDozer Okay, whatever.
