Is it time for the President Trump haters to move on and unity and support the United States?

I thought that’s what mature adult Americans are supposed to do and have always done myself when my preferred candidate did not win?

Sorry. Patriotism and loyalty not only allow but demand space for political dissent. Reasoned political dissent is the most patriotic thing one can do. This is reflected in the writings of our founding fathers. It's reflected in the political dialog surrounding our greatest leaders. People think Obama and Trump got it bad-- Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln... they were drawn and quartered in the political debate of the day. And it's also reflected in the interpretation of the 1st amendment by our greatest jurists like Holmes, Brandeis and Black. Personally, I can't think of an element of our society as uniquely American as active and open political dissent. I believe it was Justice Hugo Black that said there is risk in political and social dissent destabilizing the union, but there is more threat in attenuating free speech preventing our democracy from functioning. And that in the absence of an immediate threat we have to err on the side of free speech and thus dissent to err on the side of democracy. I sort of really don't care about any specific POTUS or party or politician as much as I care about that.

@CopperCicada Wow this is the most solid educated answer anyone will read all day.

@CopperCicada They didnt have social media back during the 1800's.
It was not even close. Are you kidding. 🙂

@NiftyWhite Yes, certainly out of place on a political thread. 😉

You hit the nail on the head. “Reasoned” dissent has been totally absent and replaced by ranting hate. @CopperCicada

@jackjjackson The answer is no. I cannot and will not support someone who disrespects people, and other countries while he is in office. If you cannot see that this is wrong, then you need to do some soul searchin bad. 🙂

So you would continue to be in the hater column 👀 Not that it’s a surprise. @Zonuss
@Zonuss I think what you say points to a deep point about the spirit of our nation. It is clear that the intention of our founding fathers and our greatest jurists insights into our basic freedoms-- that it is the American people who are the ethical conscience of America. Not our executive. Somewhere we have gone into a dark space. If you go back to our great modern presidents, the spirit is that they are bringing out in the best of us. Eisenhower skeeved the cult of executive leadership. We've gone wrong in the last generation in seeing our POTUS as a savior.
@jackjjackson I'm not sure how that makes @Zonuss a hater and not a person engaged in critical analysis.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Critical analysis requires more depth than generalities and name calling. @CopperCicada
@jackjjackson he said
The answer is no. I cannot and will not support someone who disrespects people, and other countries while he is in office.
That's about as even keel as responses come.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
That one is a generality. This thread contains plenty of name calling. That particular gentleman does not provide reasoned responses merely generalities with name calling thrown in. @CopperCicada
@jackjjackson OK. I haven't looked at the other subthreads. My notifications don't go off unless it's a subthread I've commented in.
@jackjjackson I got no beef with you. I'll just never ever sit quiet to the suggestion that people silence their voices. Even the most idiotic political speech is protected by the 1st amendment.

I didn’t delete him as others do when users don’t stay on topic. He may write whatever he wants within the realm of civility and it is given the attention it merits. @CopperCicada
