He is great leader and a criminal in same time

@Giaalexer 2.5 Million Germans were killed in WWII which he started and couldn't win. He didn't listen to his generals. He wouldn't surrender when the war was lost. He barely came out of his bunker for the last year of the war. He committed suicide but left surrender to others.

How is that a great leader of his people exactly?

Surprisingly that is mostly a meme. Most of the time he did listen to his generals. German high command had its own issues and blind spots - they pushed for operation Barbarossa in its time-frame (and while ultimately unwinnable, the timing proved brilliant) despite clear logistical shortcomings, for example.

And sometimes, when Hitler overruled his generals - he was right.

Really great video on this topic.

But yeah, in the end Hitler destroyed his country, and that's not a hallmark of great leadership.

@QuixoticSoul Thanks. I’ll watch.

@SW-User It really is a fantastic lecture with rare explanatory power, and just about anyone who is interested about the period will learn a few things. I was not a fan of Bob Dole when he ran for office, but his little institution? think tank? puts on some interesting events.

The Prussian ethos of following orders must have been a central weakness of grand strategy. It is reasonable that Prussian officers would not have had an ethos of independent advice. However, that they felt this towards an Austrian corporal is extraordinary.@QuixoticSoul
