At very popular meeting places around the world with the exception of America, well-heeled travelers would go to a popular meeting place at each of those locations and leave behind a hand-written note on a wall of a train station for example, in the hopes that an old distant friend whom he knew would eventually make it to that same place as well and find the note.

When that old friend would then travel to a place like Paris or Nice or Istanbul or to a popular island in Greece, he or she would purposely go to the train station and read all the notes to see if one was left behind for them specifically. This also occurred in the late `60's and early `70's when teenagers would back-pack across Europe and would often meet up in places like Morocco or Tangiers. That communications protocol still exists today, because many well-heeled travelers of today do not have listed telephone numbers, nor can they be found anywhere in google search.

If there was an urgency found written in the note for that old friend to then contact his buddy who left the note, the notes would usually read something like:

"Code name 'Jack-be-nimble', please contact code name 'Jack-be-quick' when you arrive in London... and leave your number at my dear mother's house in St Johns Wood!". Those two code names were typical jargon of WWII Vets who had served together overseas and whom only those two guys would understand who each other was through prior agreement. That mutual agreement was usually made as they huddled together in the trenches.

In the case of a family member wanting to contact another distant family member to inform them of an urgent family matter that is negatively impacting their family back home, the note would read something like:

"Obama, call home..."
