What if the looser of the presidental election automatically had to become the vice president ?

That is the way the constitution was originally written. Each state legislature chose "electors". Each legislature would also nominate two people for president. Then the electors (the "electoral college") would vote, choosing from the people nominated. The person who came in first would be president, and the runner up would be vice president.
