therighttothink50 Some I agree with; some I don't. I hope you don't mind me dissecting your words a bit...
"...enforcement of the immigration law..."No argument here. We have already reformed our immigration laws and granted amnesty and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and provided penalties to employers for violating the rules. That law was signed by President Ronald Reagan and it is time we tried enforcing it. We will have a problem with immigration as long as we allow American corporations to provide economic incentives for people to violate our laws.
"...real border security..."Qualified agreement here. If by "real border security" you mean building a wall, then I would strongly disagree with you. The wall is the stupidest idea ever uttered by a politician (and that's saying a lot). We have illegal immigrants coming into this country because
WE are inviting them them to come here. Until we stop inviting them to come, they will not stop coming. Building a wall will shift the flow to the Gulf and create a new "boat people" crisis. If we stopped inviting them the problem would end overnight.
"...end to gerrymandering..."Preaching to the choir here. I live in Massachusetts. I think we invented gerrymandering. Both parties do it and it is blatantly unconstitutional.
"...term limits for all political offices..."Agreed.
"...return to paper ballots..."Disagree. You clearly don't have faith in digital systems and I understand that. I (obviously) am far more comfortable with the digital world and partly this is generational. Digital ballots can be secured and traceable. It just takes investment. Paper ballots have issues too.
"...diversity of thought in the public school systems..."I had both very liberal and somewhat conservative teachers in my high school social studies / history curriculum (I presume this is the area you are talking about -- doesn't much matter the political persuasion of a math teacher) and I am in the northeast. I don't think this is as big a problem as I hear from people.
"...US Constitution as a requirement..."As a student of government myself, you will get no argument here. I believe the Declaration and our Constitution to be among the greatest political documents in western civilization.
"...Bring back the draft..."I STRONGLY disagree on this one. While I will be entering service on October 1st, this was a choice I made. I'm fairly certain that even our military leaders are opposed to a draft at this point.
"...require one year of military service..."See above.
"...English as the official language for this nation..."I don't want to presume why YOU say this, but most people who say this are really expressing an anti-Spanish sentiment. This statement lacks understanding of the nature of America. We have NEVER been an English-only nation. What would you say to families in northern Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont who have roots back to the revolution and have worked the land for generations and NEVER SPOKE ENGLISH as their first language? What would you say to residents of Louisiana whose families date back to before the purchase and NEVER SPOKE ENGLISH? What would you say to the proud people of America's indigenous nations each with their own languages that predate English colonization of North America. What would you say to the American citizens of Puerto Rico? And what, pray tell, would you say to the proud people of the former Kingdom of Hawaii?? These are just a small sampling of the areas of America that are not now and never have been English language areas. I'm sorry you feel threatened by a bi-lingual or multi-lingual culture, but we have always been a multi-lingual nation.
"...tyranny of the federal reserve..."I'm going to disagree on this one too, but maybe I don't understand what you mean. Please explain what "tyranny" is exercised by the Fed?
"...real interest rates not fake ones..."Please explain.
"Globalism sucks for America and freedom."Please explain.
"We are becoming too comfortable in trusting a technocracy."Well, again, I am comfortable with technology and live a very digital life. Perhaps this is generational. What about technology and a technocracy to you not trust?
"Too comfortable in embracing a surveillance state,Oh I so agree here. I am fully open to Google and it scares me sometimes how much they know about me. But, I do nothing to hide from them. It's a concern. (Yes, I know they aren't "the state," but the principle applies.)
"too nihilistic in the way we look at things.Maybe this describes some people, but far from all and I would doubt a majority.
"We are devolving into machine like drones who have no moral clarity or dreams.Again, maybe some, but not all.
"We have now become content to exist in a permanent state of illusion where tyranny is not only ignored but welcomed.Depending on your definitions, I think we agree on this one. One of my big issues with recent American history is the blind eye that both Congress and SCOTUS turn to presidents exceeding their constitutional authority. Our checks and balances have been abandoned and each president pushes it further and further. We need to reel them in quick.
