when your 10 and with a guy in his 40s that mostly just like movies from the 40s 50s and 60s and is rather boring its not like you could be like ''oh shes hot right''

I was 25 or 26 so to me it just seemed logical that there would be coed showers in the future. Yeah, I can see why Brits would like that film lol, it's all about what's not said.

i guess it could tell the future as far as war and propoganda that happend a few years later

@coolboy86 Good point re Iraq. We satirise war propaganda of the past but don't recognise it in the here and now. This time it's different...

@coolboy86 It was very prophetic, and it was a nice satire of the hubris of the late 90s, the same hubris that led to the Iraq war. I like how the humans were the real bad guys but that it was never made explicit.

@SW-User I've read the book too and it's very different and very serious. The book is more cowboys and aliens, without any irony. It's cold-war triumphalism but with bugs instead of communists.

The film director was Paul Verhoeven, a left-wing Dutch guy who also did Robocop. The tale is that he read the first few chapters and thought; "F**k this, its a dumb chauvinistic right-wing book and I can't take it seriously so I'm gonna take the piss."

@Burnley123 I had always wondered why the film was basically a criticism of the book, now I know why! I hated Heinlein for the reasons you describe and actually it took people some persuading to convince me to go see it with them and I was completely and very pleasantly surprised.
