To be fair, both Democrats and Republicans can be conservative, small c. There are also other reasons to want to retain the status quo. Not all Democrats are progressive; not all Republicans are retarded :)

id imagine a lot of ppl make their political choices based on what each party does as opposed to what their party represents (to conserve/to liberate). I can also imagine a lot of party representatives don't act on what their party represents. That's why the political system needs to change because it is out dated only predominantly still conventional. It's this resistance to change that causes the tension, we are literally working against ourselves, no?!
