Only in a hybrid fashion ... those cars lug around two motors, two sets of problems, an akward energy braking model.
Electric is never the way to go with a mechanical device.
It has been tried since 1901
Hydraulic drive train, with 90% energy recapture and reduction of the engine size is the all-round winner

Love the Prius ... brilliant car.
It proved a concept.
But, on energy efficiency ... lugging batteries around, and high-speed transfer of mechanical energy to chemical storage ... is not efficient.
Storing mechanical energy in a mechanical form eliminates the conversion losses.
Electric, while it has a place ... has storage limits.
As does mechanical

They built it ... they tested it ... they refined it
Unfortunately congress locked the technology up for 50 years.
West coast battery interests and east coast distain for SUV people created the zeal to lock up the technology.
China is using it though.
Can not be having 50mpg SUVs running around
