They have always been that way. Even bore democracy, there was still a need to get approval, make domestic alliances and work with people. Bad Kings didn't tend to last very long.
It necessary to be accountable and I like that. What I don't like (and maybe you agree) is reality TV element and the image obsessed mendacity of most political 'actors'. Politics is dumbed down when it should be leveled up. The media do not help, obsessed as they are with image and palace intrigue instead of policy.
